FuelEU Maritime Initiative: Council adopts new law to decarbonise the maritime sector
By Adeeba Khan In Industry News On 28th July 2023
The European Council has officially adopted the eagerly awaited FuelEU marine initiative, signalling a far more decisive effort to reduce ship emissions than any agreement agreed reached at the IMO this month.
Passenger ships and container vessels will be obliged under the new regulations to connect to shore power and operate on grid electricity when docked, effectively eliminating exhaust gas emissions during that period.
The initiative primarily endorses renewable non-biological fuels (RFNBO), such as green ammonia and green methanol. It also represents aversion to biofuels, which, although they can be produced from pure waste and residue, can also be manufactured using specifically cultivated crops.
