June 2022: Airfreight Update
By NNR USA In Insight On 9th June 2022
Tip of the Month
- All wooden skids must be heat treated and must have a clear and legible IPPC stamp for international shipping.
- Customers should increase their lead time expectations until further notice.
Capacity into China is starting to improve since the China COVID lockdown was lifted last week. Air carriers are now accepting hazardous cargo again to Chinese destinations, which is also a great sign.
Fuel surcharge remains high with the potential to increase further, impacting airfreight and truck transport pricing.
Japan and Europe’s capacity is stable with space availability, though in high demand.
Airfreight Tonnage remained stable and strong to most destinations.
USA
- Terminal and Warehouse Congestion is Moderate due to short staffing and, in turn, causes truck backlogs and higher than regular wait times at the airport terminals. A lot of the improvement we are seeing is carrier-dependent. In general, Chicago has seen improvement.
- Trucking Driver Shortages affect trucking capacity for all modes of transport, specifically on Full Truck Loads.
Commodity
- Lithium Batteries have become more challenging to ship, especially those that must ship as ‘Cargo Aircraft Only.’ Many air carriers are opting out of handling lithium batteries.
