You can face substantial penalties and even jail time for intentionally "exporting" items, technology, software or information that may be under the control of one or more U.S. government agencies.

Many goods are in free circulation and able to be exported easily, however, there may be export prohibitions on commodities, people, companies and/or countries. It's important to check before exporting.

Export information is reported to the U.S. government as Electronic Export Information (EEI), through the Automated Export System (AES).

The most common form to communicate shipping information is the Shipper's Letter of Instructions (SLI).

Critical information is supplied on the SLI. Two data elements that are sometimes overlooked: Export License information and Export Commodity Control Numbers (ECCN), if applicable.
