Wood Crate Air Cargo Screening Update

By In USA Trade Alerts On 12th January 2022

On August 1, 2021, the TSA mandated that all cargo onboard Passenger and Cargo aircraft be screened at the 100 percent level. This placed a heavy load on the industry (airlines and freight forwarders) to meet these requirements. Since this initial date, more and more airlines and their vendor screening service have moved to canine teams to screen cargo. This has proved to be the fastest method to process freight for the airlines and their vendors.

Recently, it’s become more prevalent that the airlines and their vendors are requiring that shippers drill 4-inch holes on the sides of wooden crates and insert vents for the canines to sniff for explosive materials in a more expeditious manner.

Crates that are received without vent holes are being refused or the vendor screening service is drilling the holes themselves.

NNR USA is recommending that Shippers adhere to the below recommendations when building crates:

Wood Crates

It is recommended by screening vendors
that two 4-inch vent holes are to be drilled
on each side with 4-inch round vent
inserts with Louvers and Insect Screens placed within the drilled holes.

NOTE: Crates where 2 vent locations on a
panel / side would be impractical, only
one 4-inch hole per side would be required
plus the vent.
