China-Europe: Rail Freight Disruptions

Recent developments have temporarily disrupted rail freight traffic along one of the busiest routes linking China and Europe. Authorities in Poland have closed a major border crossing, which serves as a critical gateway for shipments.

This closure directly affects rail transshipment terminals in the region (including Małaszewicze) and companies that rely on this route for the smooth flow of goods. With around 90% of China-Europe rail shipments normally passing through Poland, the impact is being felt not only locally but across the wider European market.

Containers are building up on both sides of the border, while trains are forced to hold at sidings until capacity becomes available. This situation creates added complexity for businesses dependent on rail freight, particularly as demand for e-commerce-driven flows between Asia and Europe continues to grow.

To mitigate these risks, some operators are turning to alternative solutions, such as combined rail-sea services or rerouting through other European gateways. While these adjustments may not fully remove delays, they demonstrate the resilience and adaptability of the logistics sector when faced with unexpected challenges.
