Super Typhoon Ragasa impact on Hong Kong & Southern China

According to the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) and the Hong Kong Government’s latest assessments, Super Typhoon Ragasa is expected to significantly impact Hong Kong and Southern China starting 23 September 2025, with conditions worsening into 24–25 September 2025.

The following key updates are in effect:

Weather & Safety Updates

• The Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 was issued at 2:20 PM (HKT), 23 September 2025.
• According to the present forecast, Ragasa will be closest to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary tomorrow morning (24 September).
• The Observatory will assess whether it is necessary to issue a higher Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal between 11:00 PM tonight (23 September) and 3:00 AM tomorrow (24 September).
• Severe storm surge and sea levels may be comparable to Typhoon Hato (2017) and Typhoon Mangkhut (2018).
• Staff safety remains a priority; our office will close during Typhoon Signal No. 8 and resume once signals are lowered in line with government guidance.

Transport & Operations Updates

• Airports: The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has cancelled approximately 700 flights on 23 September and may suspend all passenger flights for 36 hours (6:00 PM, 23 Sep – 6:00 AM, 25 Sep). Further updates will follow based on weather conditions.
• Ocean Ports: Terminal operations were suspended from 12:00 PM, 22 September and are expected to resume on 25 September, subject to conditions.
• Impact: Significant delays, cancellations and schedule disruptions are expected for both flights and vessels.
