By In USA Trade Alerts On 18th November 2021

Starting January 1st, 2022, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will phase down the production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in the U.S. by 85% by 2036.

Imports of bulk HFCs and HFC blends of any quantity will require allowances, subject to limited exceptions.

Learn more about how the allowances work and which Harmonized Tariff codes are regulated for HFCs here: EPA Fact Sheet: Overview of Requirements for Importers of Hydrofluorocarbons

HFCs are potent greenhouse gases intentionally developed as replacements for ozone-depleting substances in the refrigeration, air conditioning, aerosols, fire suppression, and foam blowing sectors.
